Sergio Cariello has become an internationally recognized comic book illustrator with Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and many more iconic characters on his resume. Sergio was only five years old when he decided to be a cartoonist and just 11 when his creation, Frederico the Detective, won a local newspaper's contest. Raised in the church, Sergio remembers the impact The Picture Bible had on him as a child growing up in Brazil, stating, "The Portuguese version was divided into small black and white booklets. The stories were in a format that I had enjoyed- the comic book- so I just immersed myself in the Bible because I could see the stories, not just read the words." Little did Sergio imagine that God would bring his two loves, the Word of God and illustrating, together as he would one day be tapped to illustrate The Action Bible, the updated version of The Picture Bible that had fascinated him as a child.
At first glance, the Bible in comic book form might seem to threaten the solemnity of the Word of God. Hold The Action Bible in your hand with the vivid images appearing to leap off the page as the intertwining of text and image drag you through the action and your impression might be just the opposite. The story of a creator that is deeply involved in both the mundane and supernatural details of His creation's existence seems eminently well-served by the stunning action scenes.
The miracles involved in this version of the Bible are not restrained to those of the Old and New Testament but continue in the present day as Tampa's Sergio Cariello shares the three year process to capture over 215 Bible stories in over 700 pages.

Getting the Job
Sergio shares how he became the artist for The Action Bible, stating, "In 2005, I won first prize in a Christian competition and my entry was printed in a book. Representatives from David C. Cook were looking for an illustrator for The Action Bible, saw my entry and asked me to do a try-out page just in pencil and to submit it within a week. I was so excited that the next day, I submitted my entry of the story of Goliath- fully colored, inked and lettered. The pages I did are the ones you can see in The Action Bible."
Realistic is one of the first words that most people use to describe the images associated with The Action Bible. One person, while leafing idly through the pages stopped and remarked, "I've always read that Rahab lived in the walls but never understood how that worked until I saw this page." On the cover, the image of Jesus holding a shekel is particularly arresting. Many are intrigued by the images, but few could imagine the painstaking research that went into them as Sergio turned to a variety of research sources including replicas of the shekels used in Biblical times.

The Research Involved
"Every comic book project that I get myself involved in, I try to purchase props," shares Sergio. "For the Bible, I purchased a jawbone from Spain so that I could hold it in my hand and see how Samson felt when he killed the five thousand Philistines. In my research, I used pictures, watched old movies, read books, and even referenced the original version of The Picture Bible. I have also always enjoyed studying the Bible in the original language, so that was helpful. Music, paintings, the arts – they are all an influence and act like scuba gear for a diver- allowing me to dive into a subject and to explore more deeply. A tight deadline also helps with the inspiration since we are talking about 750 pages of art that were completed in only three years."
It is a temptation to envision the artist as only a sterile conduit for the inspiration on a project like this but Sergio is quick to point out that as a follower of Christ, this experience had a life-changing effect on him long before we were able to hold it in our hands.
"I would play music from The Passion of the Christ as I drew and sometimes I would have to stop drawing, kneel down and talk to God about what I was working on because it was impacting me so greatly," tells Sergio.

His Favorite
Story or Page
"There are many stories that have touched me including Samson. Samson was always in love with the Philistines and the worldly things they represented. He was always attracted to their women and not to his own people and their conservative ways. He is a picture of me- always wanting more. Always pushing to go beyond the boundaries that God has given me," Sergio explains. " Often we want more and are greedy and God will pull the rug out from under us to remind us how dependent we are on Him. We have the freedom to go out from under God's umbrella, but in the end, like Samson, we can say, 'Let me not die blinded by my sinful way but to realize that I need Your mercy.' There is nothing better than to know that the God of Abraham and Samson is the same God of Sergio and every person who reads this Bible."
"Another favorite story is of Jesus in the New Testament when they brought the women caught in sin and He is drawing in the sand. That page was so powerful. I had to stop and worship my God for choosing me in spite of myself as I cried out to know more of His mercy and love and not be caught up in self-righteous behavior," he shares.

Representing the Breadth of Scripture
"The Bible is very violent and God does not apologize to anyone for its contents. We know that we are dealing with an audience of kids and teenagers and so sensibility also plays a part," Sergio explains. "One thing that is very important in graphics is learning that less is more, so often the tagging of the scene will do much more than showing the details of the violence. Like Hitchcock did by showing a scene in silhouette, it invites the reader to fill in the information."
Comicons, comic books and worlds populated by fantasy figures might seem a strange environment for a follower of Christ, but you get the impression in talking to Sergio that there is no better place. He is passionate about his ability to speak to many about what could be termed the "original action heroes." In an often cutthroat industry with a limited number of assignments available for top tier illustrators, Sergio's quiet confidence in his "agent", the Holy Spirit, is a breath of fresh air in a frenzied profession.

Finding Success
as an Illustrator
Sergio shares, "I am often approached by people who are interested in getting into this industry. I encourage people to fulfill their dreams, but I also place an emphasis on finding out their beliefs. I'm able to tell them that if you really want to be successful, you can't depend on fate, luck or circumstances. Work hard as if it depended on you to fulfill your dreams, but trust God. I try not to be too preachy, but I do try to guide them through sharing how I did it. To me, the most important thing is to know our place in God's story and that ultimately, we were created for His glory and to bless people. We have to tune ourselves and our motivations to Him and to change our goals and motivations to His definition of success and what He designed us to do."
"When I draw characters, I create them for a particular event and scene. They can't say to me that they want to be on page 48 instead of page 111 and the same is true for us. Life is too short. We have to make our mark in a good way so that others can have eternal life. Jesus is the artist of artists and He has designed each of us with specific gifts and talents. You have to remember that 5,000 can be fed by a small lunch. Romans 8:28 reminds that all things work together for the good of those who love God and called to His purpose. When we are aware of this verse and living it, we will not murmur or complain about our lives," he adds.
Teaching the Next Generation
Sergio has been asked, "Don't you feel awkward teaching your competitors?" He replies, "Truly and honestly, I believe that whatever God has for me is mine. Nobody can take it from me if I walk in His good works by keeping in tune with Him. If the communications between us are clear, I will not miss the turn. If someone else gets an assignment that I wanted and I am trying my best, I have to remember that God is more interested in my character and His ideas and dreams for us then our own."
As the interview comes to an end, Sergio's voice takes on a quiet note of awe at the realization that God has allowed him to have a small part in His master plan to share His story with the next generation, those who would never pick up a Bible in any other form and even those for whom the stories have become almost too familiar. Viewed from one perspective, the Bible is a simple love story between God and His people. Sergio Cariello is a man who has been forever marked by the love of his Savior.

The Impact of The Action Bible
"Recently I was looking at a copy of The Action Bible for the third or fourth time when I had a couple spare minutes to leaf through it. (Holding it) I remembered the thrill and the joy I felt in the creation and the production of this project. Ron Hutchcraft says. 'We are like boats that cause waves that impact others. Even after we are gone, the decisions that we make today will affect others in ways that we won't know this side of heaven.' Drawing Captain America, Batman and Spiderman is great, but all these superheroes will pass, The Word of God will not pass; The Action Bible is the Word of God and we will be talking about the Word in eternity," adds Sergio.

Sergio Cariello Action Bible App

Today I was saddened to learn that Apple rejected the best seller Action Bible as an Apple Store app, claiming it was mimicking some of its built in apple apps. The Action Bible app is functionally identical to at least 20 of other approved apps so the rejection was really unexpected. We and our developer are working through that with Apple but there is no estimate on when it will be resolved. We are not ready to give up on our current version to try other options elsewhere and we are hoping and praying Apple will let us in.

With the first batch of artists who drew
American comics, there was Sergio Cariello. And with so much talent,
did not take long for him to enter the gallery of the best. His art already
appeared in Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Iron-Man , Wonder Woman and dozens of other classic characters. In
2007, Cariello was among the finalists for the Eisner Award, the Oscars of
Comics, with the series "Lone Ranger". It was then that he
began to draw The Action Bible - An
impressive publication, the quality and artistic narrative, and the
huge volume - 215 stories in 750 pages. Where do you find so much
motivation? "I love to draw, and also take my commitments seriously.
. The project was also very important to me:
draw the book of God. " In a wonderful coincidence, the original project
was related to the Illustrated Bible (The Picture Bible), which
Sergio Cariello read as a child in Brazil. Since 1985 the
artist lives in the U.S. with his wife, and continues to draw for Marvel
Comics. Meanwhile, The Action Bible exists only in the original version, in English, published by
David C. Cook. But negotiations for a Brazilian version is already underway. Meanwhile, enjoy the interview with Sergio Cariello:
IN GOD Comic Book - What was the reaction of the public to the The Action Bible?
Cariello - Positively Awesome! The reaction had already started with a page, used in the book, done even before
being a part of The Action Bible: Jesus carrying our cross on the
road of sorrows
, surrounded by mocking pedestrians, spits from his own people and mistreatment of
Roman soldiers. I made this page for free, for a brother in Christ, Alec Stevens, who
taught with me at the Joe Kubert School for a magazine he published called "Glory to
God. "I took this page to conventions and at least twice I saw people
extremely touched and moved when they beheld the page! The reaction was
too powerful. Something supernatural happened with this image of Jesus
carrying the cross. Then I used the same page, along with other pages that I did, also without
remuneration for Ralph Miley, published in another book called Proverbs and Parables "and finally
submitted them once again( 3rd time) to a competition organized by Nate Butler, where I won first place. The competition
published pages in a book. A copy of this book went into publisher David C. Cook in
time they were searching for the designer to redo the project The Picture Bible.
When Bob de la Pena, director of art at the time,
leafing through the book and saw the page of the Cross, said: "I think we
found our artist. " I have received several emails
from people who bought the Action Bible
thanking me for the fact the book impacted their lives and
family. I have not heard any neutral or negative reaction
to The book, since it was first launched in
September 2010,It has been among the 20 books most
sold in its category, selling more than
many of the superhero comics.
Comic Book NO GOD - and his colleagues designers, what the reaction from
them?
Cariello - was the same positive reaction. The book has been
the most successful of my career as a cartoonist.
Interview Sergio Cariello
Comic Book GOD IN -Did It take you away from other projects,
to devote solely to Action The Bible, to produce the volume of pages
to be drawn?
Cariello - No. I continued doing at least two projects
simultaneously. I learned early never to depend on one
project. And I also learned to produce more rapid than the
majority. And I like the variety of jobs.
Comic Book NO GOD - Did you actually read any of the
adaptations of the Bible in comic book released as Manga
Messiah, Mecha Manga Bible or Bible?
Cariello - I have not read these, but bought books that helped me
as reference and objects as well as the jawbone of a
donkey , for use in the story of Samson, when he kills a thousand
Philistines, bought swords, miniature animals, boats, pictures,
digital files. The publisher also invited me to visit them and the art director
had replicas of objects used in Biblical times.
IN GOD Comic Book - It is true that the Bible project of The Action was also inspired by The
Picture Bible by Iva Hoth? Do you have memories of that book?
Cariello - publisher David C. Cook published The Picture Bible in the 70s. Andre Le Blanc
illustrated the book, Iva Hoth only paraphrased the original text of the Historic Bible. David C. Cook
decided to revitalize the book and hired me for this. Then decided to change the name to The
Action Bible to continue publishing The Picture Bible, which continues to sell well. I still
I have the Picture Bible, in Portuguese, when I first read in 1976. Love it. Andre Le
Blanc, who has passed away, did an excellent job during the seven years it took him to produce the
project. He had the privilege of visiting Jerusalem and use first-hand reference to the
design of the New Testament. Of course, I used what he did as a source of
reference to my work as well.
IN GOD Comic Book - I'd like you to talk about your religious experience. Do you consider yourself
a Christian or do you attend a Christian community?
Cariello - Everything that exists was created with the participation of Jesus Christ, part of the triune God.
I believe in the Bible as inerrant Word of God the Father, God the Son - (Jesus )and God the Holy Spirit.
The Bible tells me in the book of Ephesians and the letter to Peter, that I was predestined, chosen to be
His, God's, before the foundation of the world. Jesus is my master, Lord, Savior and friend. He
bought me with His blood when He died. Jesus was resurrected on the third day and lives
in me and in all who put their faith in Him. I am guided by the Holy Spirit, that in everything
teaches me ,day to day, how to live and what path to take..or draw. He has prepared good works, including this
project, for me to walk in them when I was not even there, as Psalm 139 says. This is what a
Christian is. Yes, I attended a Christian community.
IN GOD Comic Book - The list of classic characters that you
already drawn is very large. Your professional life has been
full of good times?
Cariello - My professional life has been very good. And I appreciate it
enjoy every day of it. Very Much! I still draw for Marvel and
other publishers. Today I'm drawing an issue of
Captain America to be launched in January 2011. Still
drawing the "Lone Ranger", which in 2007 was appointed
among finalists in the "Eisner Award, and in 2009 won title
Best Western publication in "True West" magazine in America.
I am also drawing a Thor book to Disney /
Marvel on the origin of Thor. I never stopped drawing
comics in the U.S since 1992, when I left the Joe Kubert School.
IN GOD Comic Book - What other new projects are you
involved, now that the The Action Bible
is published?
Cariello - I'm drawing another Christian project to be
published by Kingstone Media called "The Book of
God. "It is a book that teaches how the Bible as God's book came to be
and preserved, continuing to be the Best Seller book
of the the entire World.

Cariello - I always liked listening to music, singing, playing guitar and composing. I appreciate all kinds of
music. I like listening to music while drawing, driving and have been involved
as a singer or leader of praise and worship during the whole time that I've been a believer and
Church goer since 1979. I just composed a few Christian songs, which I include in the repertoire of
Praise and Worship in the church I attend, as the Leader of Praise. I did this for 10 years in a Brazilian church in New Jersey and have done the same in an American church
since I moved to Florida, 7 years ago, .

A few days ago I asked Joe if it'd be ok to share this video on Youtube
and he kindly said "Of Course"!
The year is1992. Joe already had stopped teaching first and second year students at that year in his school.He only taught the 3rd year
fortunates!
But that didn't stop ME to have him teach my 2nd year class, after school hours, in an exclusive session
with the Rock of comics, not in a classroom, but at his own studio, where we had the unique chance to see his originals,
ask him questions and feed our eagerly hungry brains for knowledge and wisdom from the Master of his turf: Joe Kubert!
The original video was 140 minutes long so this is part 1 of maybe 10 videos. I used a very obsolete, huge clunky video camera with VHS. The sound is poor.There is nothing professional about
the process for which I froze this moment, except the main character of this film!
When I approached Joe to do this, he said:"IF you get 15 to 20 students willing to do this, have them write down their names on paper and the characters
they'd like me to bring and I'll do it. It was an unforgettable, priceless hour and a half for me!! Not too long after that I ended up getting hired by Marvel as a ghost letterer, became a freelancer pro in the business and then returned to Joe's school as a part time instructor, while being busy in comics myself.
And I kept close proximity to my forever teacher. Plenty of occasional visits to his studio, always checking what he was working on during the seven years I remained
lecturing at the Kubert school. And I cannot forget the great times during Wednesdays lunch break, where Joe, Hy Eisman, Irwin Hasen and a few of us Instructors sat together and enjoined
ourselves. Irwin always made us all laugh, especially Joe. Even though I'm now a few hundred miles away I still keep in contact with whom I can call my friend and I never cease to learn from him.

It's funny, because out of all of Dynamite's books, I think Lone Ranger is the one that gets overlooked the most. Which is a shame, because from a craft standpoint it's also — reliably — the best book they produce. If you're a fan of traditional superhero stylishness, imagine that sort of pacing and artwork transferred to the Western genre. And it rocks.

I'm almost not sure where to begin with looking at this book, but ultimately, I keep thinking of Sergio Cariello. This guy is a major talent, with his linework having echoes of John Romita Jr. and even Joe Kubert himself. There's a real elasticity to Cariello's faces, giving his characters expressiveness and experience without ever costing any clarity. His composition also works really well here — there's a tendency from some artists to do letterbox panels, and not really vary things up inside — not so with Cariello, whose use of angles and distance really maximizes the mood. The look on John Reid's face when he finally confronts his nemesis Cavendish is perhaps one of the best moments of the book, as the sadness and rage in his eyes is palpable and intense, aided by the icy colorwork of Marcel Pinto. Dynamite, whatever you're paying these guys, keep it up, because this is an art team that is head and shoulders above the rest.

And Brett Matthews. Another overlooked talent. There's a degree of wordplay to hero comics that I think a lot of people overlook, but Matthews has that down cold. "It was always personal, Cavendish. Always." Simple, to the point, but Matthews has these one-liners throughout the entire book. I couldn't help but think of spaghetti westerns like "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly," where the characterization comes so quickly, so effortlessly, that you know who everyone is within a page of dialogue. That said, I wouldn't say that this issue is his strongest plotting — while Matthews couldn't go to 11 with John's main story for an entire 22 pages, Tonto's B-story feels a little bit like a drag. There's a resonance to revenge, which is why John has such a compelling arc — the understanding that Tonto receives is almost an anti-conflict, and feels a little more filler than killer.

Even if it isn't the team's strongest showing, there's still so much polish to the craft of Lone Ranger #24 that it's hard to be angry at it — whether you're a writing junkie or an art fiend, there's something for everyone here. For those who are looking to get somewhere outside of the superhero genre, this is definitely a great place to get your start — the big and broad artwork, the themes of justice and revenge, they're all still here, just having ditched the tights and draped itself in the trappings of the dusty Western. It may be an unassuming book, but once you give it a read, you'll learn that Lone Ranger is packing some serious artistic heat.

A Bible aimed at people who like pictures has been reinvented for those who prefer sounds.

David C. Cook's new The Action Bible, a comic book version of the Scriptures, will also be available as a listening edition from Oasis Audio, from next month.

The Bible stories presented by former DC and Marvel Comics artist Sergio Cariello in the 752-page Cook title have been adapted for an eight-CD Oasis set, which runs to almost 10.5 hours.

Additional text had to be added to the Cook narrative and dialog to translate the visual edition-an updating of Cook's classic Picture Bible publication. The Oasis set features multiple actors and sound effects.

"We do very well with Bibles at Oasis and we just thought that it would be a good idea," Oasis Director of Sales and Marketing Steve Smith said of the unusual adaptation. It could prove popular in the comic book market and serve as "a stepping stone to bring people into the real Bible" who are unfamiliar with it, he added.

Retailing for $29.99, Oasis' The Action Bible includes more than 200 Bible stories, each running between two and three minutes.

"When we saw some initial concepts of the artwork coming in from Sergio, we knew we had a very, very strong product that would also require a complete revision to the text," said Ryan Dunham, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Cook. "We also field tested the product with parents of different age groups of children, plus with children themselves. They provided valuable feedback that helped us come up with the cover, the trim size, the title and the packaging and other product ideas."

That led to the idea of having the visuals from The Action Bible coupled with an audio reading to create "a powerful experience for kids, boys especially," Dunham added. "So we pitched the idea to Oasis who also saw the vision for this product. As a result we have several ideas for how we can work together on this product that we believe consumers will really respond to."

Julia Moreno, from Club Batman, Spain, had an interest in doing an issue of their retired Batman fanzine magazine on my portray of Batman. Every issue they concentrated on different Artists and their take on the character. Since I have drawn him quite a lot in my career she was going to collect enough of those and all I had to do was to come up with a new drawing for the Cover. I never found the time to do it. When I finally was able to do it it was too late. The fanzine Mag had been canceled. But she told me I could participate in their 20th year celebration of the Club Batman through their Exposition held in Spain, of all participating artists. I was more than glad and honored to be a part of it.

A complete 784-page, full-color, hardcover version of David C. Cook's newest comic book Bible will be out this coming August and will be entitled The Action Bible. It was originally to be titled The New Picture Bible, but Cook's long-lasting classic, The Picture Bible, continues to be a bestseller, so the new edition has been given a distinctive title to avoid any confusion. Cook, located in Colorado USA, had released a shorter version of the work entitled the Picture Bible New Testament in February 2009. The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon & Graphic Art, Inc. invited me to participate in the inaugural JKS Alumni Exhibition being held at the University of Granada (http://www.ugr.es/pages/universidad/granada) in Granada, Spain. This exhibition was co-hosted by the XV Salón Internaciónal del Cómic de Granada (http://saloncomicgranada.com/) in conjunction with the University of Granada.

I was unable to attend the event but I felt honored to be among the 15 JKS alumni
to exhibit my art.

"The Granada Comic Fair turns fifteen editions, more than fifteen years of promoting the comic strip and from Andalusia, Veleta fifteen years at the head of this event.

Fx International was way fun. I picked up Chuck Dixon on my way to the Con. We always have plenty to talk about.
As we were looking for our rooms we bumped into Leonard Nemoy in the Hotel's courtyard.
He did not seem open for conversation at that moment so we just let him be.
I did quite a few sketches, signed lots of books, met new friends, re encountered old pals from Crossgen and DC and participated on a panel with Ruben Procopio( excellent sculptor and a veteran Disney artist. I have the Lone Ranger statues he sculpted) and Francesco Francavilla(Zorro artist). I'm holding a paper from California on Horses that Ruben Procopio handed me at the con. Ironically, his fiance , Jean Schanberger, interviewd me last year because of the legendary Horse Silver I draw for the Lone Ranger comic book. You can read the interview on comicartfans.com in my Gallery. I also was video interviewed by Felix from Primetimegeek.com. I had a great time! Marc Hammond made us feel well served and cared for as always.
